I really owed my club after this. Everett had gone to the store for me. Isaac removed the old furniture from the kids’ room and took it to the clubhouse to be stored until I decided what to do with it. Victor and Alan were purchasing the items we needed, like the bunkbed and mattresses. I wasn’t about to tell Raya I’d added a few things to the list, but the way she kept watching me made me think she already suspected what I’d done.

Only together one night and she seemed to read me like a damn book. The next hundred years would be interesting. I wondered if she knew her life had not only been lengthened by what Elias did to her, but also from my bite. We really needed time to talk without worrying about the kids. I hoped we’d get the chance before too long.

With the meager offerings in the kitchen, Raya made spaghetti and warmed some frozen rolls. I leaned a hip against the counter near the stove and watched as she stirred the sauce while the meat finished cooking. The noodles were in a pot of cool water, waiting to be used.

“Why does this smell so much better than when I make it?” I asked.

She pointed to the spices in the rack on the counter. “Because I actually opened those and used them.”

“Doesn’t the sauce already have seasoning in it?”

“A little. The meat didn’t, though. I didn’t want to make it too spicy, but I thought it might be bland without anything extra. I added a little pepper, an Italian blend, and some garlic salt. I wouldn’t have minded using red pepper flakes, if we had some. I tried not to add anything to the shopping list I didn’t feel was essential.”

I quickly sent a text to Everett asking him to pick up some. “Anything else we need as far as seasonings or marinades?”

“Hmm. Minced garlic would be good. Cayenne, chili powder, cumin. I won’t know for sure what we’ll need until I figure out what I’m cooking. I’d love to find some recipes to try.”

Grab a cookbook or two, and these spices. I included the list she’d rattled off and hit send.

Everett responded almost immediately. I’m at the grocery, idiot. They don’t have cookbooks. I’ll get one of those women’s magazines that has recipes in it.

How the fuck was I supposed to know that? It wasn’t like I’d ever bought one before. When I went to the store, I bought the bare necessities and didn’t stop to browse. I liked to be in and out in less than fifteen minutes.

“I’ll drain the meat and add it to the sauce. We can eat in a few minutes. Will you get Logan and Mari? They can help set the table.”

“You got it.” I kissed her temple before walking to the kitchen doorway. It didn’t seem to surprise her as much as it had the first few times. I wanted her to become accustomed to affection. She didn’t talk about her life before Elias grabbed her.
